LIVE UNITED

Underneath everything we are, underneath everything we do,
we are all people.

Connected, interdependent, united.

And when we reach out a hand to one, we influence the condition of all.

That's what it means to
LIVE UNITED.

HEALTH

The Healthy Community Impact Council works to identify the best use of resources to reduce risky behavior that results in diminished health for Fresno youth and adults. A healthy community means avoiding behaviors that have negative health consequences.

OUR GOAL

Increase the number of youth and adults who are healthy and avoid risky behaviors.

  1. Ensure that youth and adults are knowledgeable about the health impact of unsafe sex, alcohol, drug and tobacco use

  2. Disseminate information about the factors and habits that contribute to obesity

  3. Increase public access to resources for achieving and maintaining good health

WHAT WE DO

The following represent the HEALTH activities UWFC is currently involved in:

  • Women’s Initiative
An organized circle of influential women who strengthen our community through a focused investment of their time, talent and treasure to address urgent issues of particular concern to women and girls and who leave a legacy for future generations. This group of women accepted as their initial project the monumental challenge of tackling one of the largest, systematic problems in our county, substance abuse.

  • WINGs
Women In the Next Generation was established by the Women’s Initiative as a way of providing high school and college-aged young women opportunities to give back to their community. WINGs members are mentored by the local female leaders of the Women’s Initiative of Fresno County.

  • Lock It Up. Clean It Out. Drop It Off.
A collaborative effort among the Women’s Initiative, Fresno County Sheriff’s Department and the California Health Collaborative’s Lock It Up Project. Twelve mail boxes donated by the USPS were painted, given new logos and are waiting to be placed at sub-stations throughout Fresno County . This project is working to educate the community about the importance of locking up their prescription drugs, cleaning out and dropping off all unused, unwanted and expired prescription drugs and disposing of them properly at one of the 12 drop points.

This one-day event provides fun physical fitness training and nutritional education for underserved children ages 6 - 14 years old.  UWFC works in collaboration with Fresno State Athletics, former NFL star Lorenzo Neal and Valley trainers to encourage healthy and active lives for youth in our Valley. The goal is that each child will come away with fun activities and exercises they can incorporate in their home lives. Dieticians also provide facts on ways to eat healthier and more nutritious meals.

  •  "Let's Move"

This Initiative, spearheaded by First Lady Michelle Obama, focuses on childhood obesity, physical activity, and healthy eating choices. Along with hosting events such as Operation: Fresno Shape Up and health fairs throughout the county, United Way of Fresno County is committed to supporting the growth and efforts of Community Partners and other agencies that are making a difference in fighting childhood obesity.
