DAY OF ACTION
UWFC President, R. Michael Alexander reads with youth at the Zimmerman Boys & Girls Club
Each year, United Ways across the country mobilize communities to Give, Advocate and Volunteer on the longest day of the year. This year, the Day of Action took place on Tuesday, June 21, 2011. Here in Fresno County, we have chosen to use this day to create opportunities for volunteers to share their passion for reading with children in summer programs. UWFC focused on a 10-year goal set forth by the Successful Children Impact Council, which is to increase the number of children who read at grade level by Grade 4. Together, with the mission of the Successful Children Impact Council and the work of the Central Valley Book Bank, the Day of Action was a success. Highlights from this years' event include:
• Over 60 youth and adult volunteers chose to each GIVE two hours of their time to read with youth. That equals over 120 service hours!
• Over 200 youth participated in Day of Action activities and were able to take home a book bag filled with three free books of their choice!
• Over 470 brand new books were given away to seven sites in Fresno County, which is 3,300 more books going back toward the community!
